🛒How to make your grocery list write itself

A good shopping list isn't the one you remembered to write. It's the one that came out of what you already decided to cook.

Most shopping lists are written twice: once badly, on a scrap of paper, and once again in the supermarket, from memory, in front of the shelf. The problem isn't discipline. It's that the list is being written from scratch, when all the information needed to write it already exists in what you decided to cook.

What a list generated from a plan gets right

  • Quantities are merged across recipes — three recipes using onions produce one line, not three.
  • Amounts reflect how many people each meal is for, because the plan already knows.
  • Items are grouped by ingredient category, so you shop aisle by aisle instead of criss-crossing the shop.
  • You can still add one-off items that didn't come from a recipe — bin bags don't belong to a recipe.

Order the aisles like your shop, not like a database

Category grouping only helps if the categories are in the order you physically walk. Reorder them so the list follows the layout of the shop you actually go to, top to bottom. Done once, it pays back every week — you stop backtracking for the thing you passed four aisles ago.

Then get the phone out of your hand

Shopping is a two-handed activity. A trolley, a bag, a child, a phone — one of those has to go. The shopping list is available on Apple Watch, so you can tick items off from your wrist as they go in the trolley, and the tab badge on the phone keeps showing how much is still left to buy.

🗣️

Add things by voice

The moment you notice you're out of something is rarely the moment you're holding your phone. Siri and Shortcuts can add an ingredient to the list hands-free, with the app asking for the quantity and unit if you want to be precise.

💳

Loyalty cards where you need them

The card is only ever needed at the till, thirty seconds after the list stopped being useful. Storing supermarket loyalty cards next to the shopping list, with scannable barcodes, means one app in your pocket instead of a wallet of plastic.
